COUNCIL BLUFFS — It’s not opening at theaters across the country, but it is available to local churches and individuals for a free-will donation. “Maddy” was videotaped in Omaha and Council Bluffs and produced by YET Productions and Leesley Films of Council Bluffs. It was written, produced and directed by Devon Leesley — who also composed the musical score, except for one song by Kyle Knapp — and stars his wife, Kathy Leesley. “It is a family movie with a Christian message,” Devon Leesley said, noting that there is “no sex, no nudity, no cussing.” The movie follows the life of a homeless widow who lives on the streets (Leesley used a lot of homeless people as extras). Orphaned at an early age, the woman feels guilty about her parents’ deaths and feels God is “beating up on her.” “She lost her parents, she lost her husband seven years ago, she lost contact with her brother,” Leesley said. “She was carrying this heavy burden so, to redeem herself, she tried to be a giver.” When she accepts the Gospel message of forgiveness, he said, she begins to give “in the right way.” Despite her situation, she is generous toward others. She chooses not to focus on her own problems. She tries to protect a young developmentally disabled man and a young woman. When an armed man robs a store, she waits outside and hits him with a baseball bat. He gets away but drops the money, which she returns to the proprietors. At one point, some street friends throw a birthday party for her in the park. They remind her to make a wish and then ask her what she wished for. “To dance a waltz right here, right now,” she says. So they do. Maddy encounters other physical and emotional problems, but the movie ultimately has a happy ending that again demonstrates her joy in helping others. Leesley took on the project despite having no background in theater or filmmaking. “This was actually something I wanted to do for a long time,” he said. When his employer eliminated his job and gave him his pension early, he took some of the money and bought video equipment so he could make it happen. He started taping in spring 2009. “We just did a little bit at a time,” he said. “It was hard and, at one point, I thought I had bit off more than I could chew.” Leesley did not spell everything out in a screenplay. “We didn’t go word for word,” he said. “I probably had one-third of it written down” and two-thirds in his head. “We’re not professional actors.” Most of the time, he told cast members what he had in mind, and then told them, “Now do it in your own way.” Leesley attended a class to learn how to use video editing software and finished the DVD a couple of months ago.. He asked a local theater to show “Maddy.” When company executives declined, Leesley rented the theater and did a free screening. He is offering copies of the DVD for use by churches and individuals, but not for resale.
